Edward Scissorhands

Imagine one of your favorite films as a website:

1.Navigating the site would be similar to traveling through the setting of the film:

I chose the film Edward Scissorhands. It's kind of a dark and sad film with happy points within it. I wanted the navigation of the site to be like navigating through a dark, cold place. For this reason I chose to use blue hues throughout.

2.The main character ( or character you choose to work with from the film ) has a relationship to this world, that will be your user's relationship to your site: Edward Scissorhands

How does your character walk?

Edward walks slowly, uncertain of the world around him. The website is filled with his memories, so he "walks" through them.

Where does your character go?

Again, the character goes through his memories. This is done through the pictures on the main page. Each picture would take you to a different part of his memory.

what does your character do? This character expounds upon the relationships he had with the people he met.

3. Consider the space and time of the setting, how does the world look, feel, sound?

The world is dark, cold, and sad. In the movie, Edward comes out of isolation when Peg finds him living in a mansion by himself. At first, the neighbors are a little wary but accepting. Later, an accident happens and everyone turns on him. Because of this he is forced back into isolation. So through this site, it is like he is alone with only himself and his memories of the time he was outside the mansion.

4. What is motion, locomotion like in the setting? How would this effect the speed of movement, of linkage in your site?

The speed is kind of slow and lethargic. I want people to take their time in exploring the site. It is not a site you are finished with in five minutes. By not putting any words with the links, I force people to explore, figure out what will take you to a different place. Much like Edward had never learned about certain things in the world before he came down from his home, the user has to figure things out on their own.

5. Create an index page that functions like a title sequence, set up the mis en scene of the film, the portal to the reception of the content

I actually took the heart, man, and dog shaped cookies straight for the title sequence of Edward Scissorhands. I used them to create a background and I used a few throughout the index page to function as buttons. This index page gives you some insight of what happened in the film without completely giving everything away. The user would need to explore to get into more of the film.

6. buttons/links/menus should offer choice towards when and/or where and or/as whom to enter this world

Each button would take the user to a place that coincides with the picture that is the button. Nothing is without reason.

7. Use either Alexander Rodchenko, Wes Wilson, or Hannah Hoch as your stylistic influences

I used Hannah Hoch as my inspiration. I really like her collages so I decided to do a collage effect on the index page of my site. Hannah used pictures and words that looked like they were cut from magazines. I used pictures, but decided to leave out any words.

8. There should be a minimum of three different types of regenerating motion. These can, of course, be related to rolling over objects, but at least two motions should be constant on the page without any interaction

On my page I have four objects that have motion without any type of interaction. There are two hearts that are beating. One if very small and you have to look for it. There is a 'man' cookie that is falling, and a pair of scissors that continuously open and close. There are also three buttons. One is hidden and you have to move over the spot where it is located to make the button appear. The other two are created from two pictures in the background. When you roll over them, the pictures come to the forefront. I force the user to figure things out on their own, to explore and find the buttons that will take them to another place.

9. Although we are only building and index page, you should have a concept for the site as a whole as well as a map of its (imagined) content. The map and menu/table of contents/index should relate to the concept of the film as a whole include the narrative arc (not just setting)

My Edward Scissorhands site takes you through the movie. Each button takes you to a place that corresponds with the picture that is the button. The picture of Edward and his father would take the user to a page that would explain the relationship between the father [inventor] and Edward [creation]. The button that has Edward and some of his topiary would take you to a page that shows his interaction with the people in the neighborhood that he stayed in. The hidden button [Edward's head] would take the user to a page with general information about Edward, his likes, dislikes, and so on. Through exploration, the user will travel through the movie until the end where Edward returns to isolation.
